The American Curl is a newer, less common cat breed that has won the hearts of cat lovers all over the world. Its distinct characteristics were caused by a spontaneous genetic mutation.

Two cats with curled ears first appeared in California, USA, in 1981. The longhaired of the two had a litter, and two of the kittens shared their mother's curled back ears.

When a former Australian Shepherd breeder saw the kittens, he realized they were not Scottish Fold cats but an entirely new breed. She displayed the two kittens at a cat show in California in 1983, and the breed was confirmed to be unknown to the cat fancy.

In 1986, the American Curl was awarded Championship status, and in 1991, the breed was granted Provisional Status.

Features

The American Curl is a medium-sized cat distinguished by its curled ears that are bent backward at the tips. A genetic mutation that affects the cartilage in the ears causes this trait. The ears should be handled with care because they are easily injured.

The body of the American Curl is muscular and well-proportioned. Their coat is medium-length and comes in a variety of colors and patterns, including solid, tabby, calico, and bi-color.

The weight of an American Curl varies depending on the individual cat and sex, but when fully grown, they typically weigh between 3 and 5 kg. Male adults are generally larger than female adults.
