West Highland White Terrier (Westie)

An adorable white furred small dog breed

Origin

The West Highland White Terrier is a small dog breed, often called Westie or Westy. Like other terrier dogs, this breed originated in Scotland. It was actually once grouped together with Dandie Dinmont, Skye, Cairn and Scottish Terriers.

This dog was used to hunt foxes, badgers and vermin.

This short-legged dog breed became popular in 1907 as Poltalloch Terriers. They were bred by a Colonel E.D Malcolm for over 60 years. In 1909, the American Kennel Club officially changed the breed's name to the West Highland White Terrier.

Characteristics

The Westie is a hardy compact little dog with a round head and blunt muzzle. He has erect pointed ears and medium-sized almond-shaped eyes. He has short legs and his feet are rounded. His tail is relatively short and carrot shaped.

This dog has a rough double coat. The outer coat is straight and hard, while the undercoat is soft, dense and thick. The coat is always white in color.

The adult West Highland White Terrier can be 36-41cm tall, and weighs an average 6.8 - 9.1 kg.

The lifespan of the Westie is 12 - 16 years.

Temperament

The Westie is a happy, curious dog. He is loving and devoted to his family. Although somewhat stubborn and demanding, he is also known to be one of the friendliest terriers.

This brave dog is hardy and active. He is alert and can be unfriendly to other animals, especially small ones. The dog may be friendly with children, but will not appreciate wild play.

The West Highland White Terrier has natural instincts for barking and digging. 

Grooming and fur care

The Westie loves to be outdoors, but can also enjoy being indoors, especially if he is given regular walks and exercise. He can therefore live where there is a farm or even in an apartment. However, he should not be left to sleep outside unless the climate is mild.

The fur requires combing 1-3 times a week. Bathing and trimming will be best every three months. Cleaning the eyes and ears will help keep him healthy and his coat clean. It can be difficult to keep the coat white, but there are dog shampoos that can help.

The nails must be cut and kept short with good scissors. To avoid fear of trimming the nails, one should start early and when necessary.

Dental care is important. A good dog toothbrush and regular toothpaste can be used to keep the Westie's teeth clean and gums healthy.
